Writing and Recovery

It has been a while since I wrote a post for you all. I had foot surgery on the 5th August and have been recovering since then, with very little movement allowed. I am now feeling much better, and am in a boot and putting weight through my foot. It has been a difficult road filled with trips and falls and potholes.

Throughout it I have been filled with a feeling that this is a turning point for me - obviously not a fast one - and the direction I want to go in going forward. Initially I believed it was to

move from my lovely house in Yorkshire to Somerset, however, this is not to be and I am content to stay here and build a future amongst the moors and dales of this beautiful part of the world. It has been tough, there is no doubt about it, but I am nothing if not resilient.

So, what comes next?

I love tutoring and am going to continue with it and working with my wonderful students to achieve their aims. I hope to pass on the concept of resilience to my students when it comes to their studies: that they can succeed even if they fall down the first, second or even third time. Success does not always come immediately. Sometimes the important thing is to simply keep trying.

And I need to take some of my own advice.

I have been putting off sending my early readers to the publishers for months, and I have procrastinated sending my novel as well. I have a whole heap more stories waiting in my head.

Perhaps one of the gifts of this enforces pause has been the chance to think about what I actually want to make room for. As my foot continues to heal, I hope I can create a little more space for writing alongside tutoring and finally begin sending some of those stories out into the world.
